Interview with Dr. Alan Getts, USMA West Point Class of 1977
In this interview, Dr. Getts discusses his very personal perspectives on questions of what happens when we die. Where do our souls go? How are we judged? Is there a Heaven and Hell? Is there such a thing as an evil being?
Alan is my classmate and friend, and we had the opportunity to sit down and talk about these questions. He is a very smart and accomplished man, a retired pediatrician medical doctor, with a very deep Christian faith. And he was kind enough to share some time with me. This interview was not planned, and I simply took advantage of his willingness, with very little notice or preparation, to sit down with me and discuss these concepts.
Alan grew up on a farm in Northern Illinois and worked hard enough to be selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. That opened a world of opportunities for him. After excelling and graduating from West Point, he attended the University of Illinois College of Medicine and specialized in pediatrics, later also attending at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA. He spend nearly all of his military career a Fort Gordon, GA, and left the service after 16 years and went into private practice in Augusta. During the Iraq war, his son was a 1st Lieutenant Army Officer in Theate, and Alan joined the Army Reserves to help do his part. After 6 years he retired from the reserves, and in 2022 he retired from his medical practice.
He continues to operate a medical billing company and a medical management company in Augusta. His last working position was serving as the Chief Medical Officer of Premier Health Network, a 500-member physician association in the Augusta area. Alan stresses that he has been blessed and that all of his work opportunities have been personally rewarding. He doesn't think that he could have planned a better path than the one God laid out for him!
He was also kind enough to be recorded and put on a podcast! I wanted to include his perspective as part of this “The Soul Unleased” podcast, because I respect different opinions, and I want to present a more balanced approach through this podcast to these critical questions.
Part 2 of this series is another interview with another long-time West Point classmate, LTC (retired) Kevin Pilgrim who is another committed Christian whom I deeply respect.
======================================
My podcasts are targeted towards left-brained types like me, whose rigid view of life restricted us from considering things outside of the tightly-organized spiritual paradigm we either grew up with or built for ourselves.
Follow my podcasts for discussions about some serious topics like grief, human suffering, prayer, religion, and spiritual practices. I also cover things that I used to consider craziness or “woo-woo” such as: meditation, manifestation, spiritualism, spiritual awakening, reincarnation, past-life regression, the channeling of spirits and aliens (seriously…), soul groups, astrology, and even Chinese fortune cookies!
